Non-Executive Director Vacancy
The Farmers’ Union of Wales was established in 1955 and works on behalf of members to achieve our vision of thriving, sustainable family farms in Wales. The Union plays a key role in ensuring that Wales has a vibrant agriculture industry, supporting rural communities, protecting the environment and ensuring food security. This commitment to support rural Wales is crucial to the viability of the Welsh language and culture.
FUW Insurance Services Ltd is an insurance broker and a wholly owned subsidiary of the FUW (UAC CYF. FUW LTD).
There will be a vacancy soon on the board of FUW Insurance Services that we wish to fill as soon as is practical.
FUW Insurance Services is a business which has grown significantly during the past five years. It has invested significantly in its internal capacity and structures to support future growth both here in Wales and across the border.
With an empathy for Wales and agriculture but not necessarily from a farming background, we would expect that successful candidates would demonstrate all of the following attributes:
● A successful business background in a privately-owned company
● Expertise in financial accounting – with relevant qualifications
● Experience of growing businesses through organic growth and/or acquisition
● Understanding of best practice in terms of people management, equality and diversity
● An understanding of financial regulation and company law
● A network of contacts that will add value to the growth of FUW Insurance Services
● A general understanding of the insurance market
Other desirable skill, though not essential, include:
● Experience of marketing, primarily in terms of analysis of markets to help identify opportunities for business growth
● The FUW operates through the medium of English and Welsh and therefore the ability to speak Welsh would be an advantage, but is not essential for this role
Honorarium
This role offers an Honorarium of £6,000 per annum, together with a reimbursement of all reasonable expenses.
Time Commitment
Board meetings are generally held online, although it is envisaged that at least one meeting a year will be face to face in mid Wales and will incorporate an annual business strategy review. There are usually 10 Board meetings a year. All board members will be consulted to ascertain their availability when confirming dates and times for Board meetings.
There are two main Board sub-committees: Audit & Risk and Remuneration. The successful candidate will be asked to sit on the Audit and Risk Committee. Sub-committees normally meet online.
These sub-committees meet from time to time with their equivalents within the Farmers’ Union of Wales. An example of such a joint meeting would be to discuss the Group Annual Report and Accounts. All board members that sit on a sub-committee will be consulted for their availability when scheduling the meetings.

An informal discussion about the role can be arranged by contacting the Group Chief Executive, Guto Bebb, by email: guto.bebb@fuw.org.uk.
